Maman died today. Maybe yesterday, I don’t know. I got a telegram from the endowment. I don’t know anything about it. Perhaps it was yesterday. The home for the aged was in Marango, 80 kilometers from Algiers. If I took the 2:00 p.m. bus, I would arrive there in the afternoon. Then we could have a wake and come back the next evening. I asked my husband for two days’ leave. I could not refuse him the leave under the circumstances, but he seemed dissatisfied. I told him that it was not my fault, but he did not respond. I knew I shouldn’t have said anything like that. Anyway, I didn’t have to make any excuses. He should have been the one to express his condolences to me. But of course, he would actually express his condolences the day after tomorrow, when he met me in mourning. For the time being, it seems that Maman is not dead. After the burial, on the contrary, this will be a matter that has been dealt with, and everything will take a more public form.

(Examples)

(Reading)
Shorten the following English sentences in both English and Japanese within 500 words.
To Sherlock Holmes she is always the woman. I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex. It was not that he felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler. All emotions, and that one particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise but admirably balanced mind. He was, I take it, the most perfect reasoning and observing machine that the world has seen, but as a lover he would have placed himself in a false position. He never spoke of the softer passions, save with a gibe and a sneer. They were admirable things for the observer—excellent for drawing the veil from men’s motives and actions. But for the trained reasoner to admit such intrusions into his own delicate and finely adjusted temperament was to introduce a distracting factor which might throw a doubt upon all his mental results. Grit in a sensitive instrument, or a crack in one of his own high-power lenses, would not be more disturbing than a strong emotion in a nature such as his. And yet there was but one woman to him, and that woman was the late Irene Adler, of dubious and questionable memory.
I had seen little of Holmes lately. My marriage had drifted us away from each other. My own complete happiness, and the home-centred interests which rise up around the man who first finds himself master of his own establishment, were sufficient to absorb all my attention, while Holmes, who loathed every form of society with his whole Bohemian soul, remained in our lodgings in Baker Street, buried among his old books, and alternating from week to week between cocaine and ambition, the drowsiness of the drug, and the fierce energy of his own keen nature. He was still, as ever, deeply attracted by the study of crime, and occupied his immense faculties and extraordinary powers of observation in following out those clues, and clearing up those mysteries which had been abandoned as hopeless by the official police. From time to time I heard some vague account of his doings: of his summons to Odessa in the case of the Trepoff murder, of his clearing up of the singular tragedy of the Atkinson brothers at Trincomalee, and finally of the mission which he had accomplished so delicately and successfully for the reigning family of Holland. Beyond these signs of his activity, however, which I merely shared with all the readers of the daily press, I knew little of my former friend and companion.
One night—it was on the twentieth of March, 1888—I was returning from a journey to a patient (for I had now returned to civil practice), when my way led me through Baker Street. As I passed the well-remembered door, which must always be associated in my mind with my wooing, and with the dark incidents of the Study in Scarlet, I was seized with a keen desire to see Holmes again, and to know how he was employing his extraordinary powers. His rooms were brilliantly lit, and, even as I looked up, I saw his tall, spare figure pass twice in a dark silhouette against the blind. He was pacing the room swiftly, eagerly, with his head sunk upon his chest and his hands clasped behind him. To me, who knew his every mood and habit, his attitude and manner told their own story. He was at work again. He had risen out of his drug-created dreams and was hot upon the scent of some new problem. I rang the bell and was shown up to the chamber which had formerly been in part my own.
His manner was not effusive. It seldom was; but he was glad, I think, to see me. With hardly a word spoken, but with a kindly eye, he waved me to an armchair, threw across his case of cigars, and indicated a spirit case and a gasogene in the corner. Then he stood before the fire and looked me over in his singular introspective fashion.
English Condensed Text
To Sherlock Holmes, Irene Adler was always the woman. It was not love, for emotions were abhorrent to his cold, precise, and purely logical mind. To a perfect reasoning machine like Holmes, strong passion was merely a distracting flaw that could impair his analytical faculties. Yet, the late Irene Adler remained the sole woman who ever held a paramount place in his memory.
After my marriage, Holmes and I had drifted apart. While I was absorbed in domestic happiness and my medical practice, Holmes remained at Baker Street, alternating between drug-induced lethargy and intense mental activity. He continued to dedicate his extraordinary faculties to solving complex crimes abandoned by the police, taking on cases across Europe.
On March 20, 1888, while returning from a patient, I passed Baker Street. Seeing Holmes’s tall silhouette pacing eagerly behind the lit window, I knew he was hot on the trail of a new mystery. Impelled by a strong desire to see him again, I rang the bell. He welcomed me with a quiet, kindly look, offered cigars and drinks, and observed me in his characteristically introspective way.
Here is a paragraph addressing the risks of Generative AI, accompanied by its Japanese translation.
The rapid rise of generative AI has transformed various industries, but it also introduces significant societal, ethical, and security risks. One of the most immediate concerns is the spread of misinformation and deepfakes. Because generative AI can effortlessly synthesize realistic images, audio, and news articles, malicious actors can exploit it to manipulate public opinion, execute sophisticated scams, or undermine democratic processes.
Another major risk involves copyright infringement and intellectual property rights. AI models are trained on vast datasets scraped from the internet, often without the consent or compensation of the original creators. This practice has triggered complex legal disputes over ownership and the fair use of artistic works.
Furthermore, data privacy and cybersecurity vulnerabilities pose ongoing challenges. Users frequently input sensitive personal or proprietary corporate information into AI tools, risking accidental data leaks. Concurrently, cybercriminals leverage generative AI to write convincing phishing emails and construct malware at unprecedented speeds.
Lastly, the economic impact on the job market remains a crucial concern. As AI automates complex tasks in fields like copywriting, graphic design, and software development, workforce displacement seems inevitable. Addressing these multi-faceted risks requires robust regulatory frameworks, rigorous ethical guidelines, and continuous technological safeguards to ensure that generative AI serves humanity safely and equitably.

- CEFR(Common European Framework of Reference for Languages):
Bears are living in many places in Japan, like big mountains and forests. They usually look for food in the trees and bushes. However, things are changing now. Bears are coming into towns and cities where people live. This happens in many parts of Japan.
Why do bears come to towns? In autumn, bears need to eat a lot of food before winter. They like to eat nuts, like acorns. Sometimes, there are not enough nuts in the mountains. Bears become hungry. They walk down from the mountains to find something to eat. In towns, they can find fallen fruits, trash, and food in gardens.
When bears come to cities, it is dangerous. Bears are big and very strong. People get scared because bears can walk near houses, schools, and train stations. Children and older people must be very careful when they walk outside. Local governments tell people to be quiet and stay inside if they see a bear. People also use bells when they walk near trees. The noise helps to scare the bears away.
Bears and people need to live safely. People are trying to keep towns clean so bears do not smell food. It is important to learn how to stay safe.

JULIET.
O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?
Deny thy father and refuse thy name.
Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,
And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.
ROMEO.
[Aside.] Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?
JULIET.
’Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What’s Montague? It is nor hand nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O be some other name.
What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call’d,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,
And for thy name, which is no part of thee,
Take all myself.
ROMEO.
I take thee at thy word.
Call me but love, and I’ll be new baptis’d;
Henceforth I never will be Romeo.
JULIET.
Oh, Romeo, Romeo, why must you be Romeo?
Disown your father and refuse your name.
Or, if you won’t, just swear that you love me,
And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.
ROMEO.
[Aside.] Should I listen more, or speak up now?
JULIET.
It’s only your name that is my enemy;
You are yourself, even if you weren’t a Montague.
What is a Montague? It isn’t a hand, a foot,
An arm, a face, or any other part
Of a man. Oh, be some other name!
What’s in a name? The flower we call a rose
Would smell just as sweet by any other name.
So Romeo, even if he weren’t called Romeo,
Would keep that perfection he has
Without that title. Romeo, drop your name,
And in exchange for your name, which isn’t part of you,
Take all of me.
ROMEO.
I hold you to your word.
Just call me your love, and I’ll be baptized anew;
From now on, I will never be Romeo again.
- wherefore art thou → why must you be
art thou(you are)と合わせて「なぜあなたは〜なのか」という疑問文に直しました。
- thou / thy / thee → you / your / you
- Deny thy father → Disown your father
- wilt / ’Tis / ’ll → will / It is / will
- wilt(will の古い2人称単数形)や、古風な短縮形である ’Tis(It is)を一般的な表記に直しました。
- nor … nor … → isn’t a … a … or …
- owes → has / possesses
- doff →drop
- Henceforth → From now on
(Ulysses)
Stately, plump Buck Mulligan came from the stairhead, bearing a bowl of lather on which a mirror and a razor lay crossed. A yellow dressinggown, ungirdled, was sustained gently behind him on the mild morning air. He held the bowl aloft and intoned:
—Introibo ad altare Dei.
Halted, he peered down the dark winding stairs and called out coarsely:
—Come up, Kinch! Come up, you fearful jesuit!
Solemnly he came forward and mounted the round gunrest. He faced about and blessed gravely thrice the tower, the surrounding land and the awaking mountains. Then, catching sight of Stephen Dedalus, he bent towards him and made rapid crosses in the air, gurgling in his throat and shaking his head. Stephen Dedalus, displeased and sleepy, leaned his arms on the top of the staircase and looked coldly at the shaking gurgling face that blessed him, equine in its length, and at the light untonsured hair, grained and hued like pale oak.

- Stately $\rightarrow$ An imposing
- stairhead $\rightarrow$ top of the stairs
- was sustained gently behind him $\rightarrow$ floated gently behind him
- fearful $\rightarrow$ paranoid
- gunrest $\rightarrow$ gun platform
- awaking $\rightarrow$ awakening
- untonsured $\rightarrow$ untrimmed

TOEIC Writing Test – Question 8 (Opinion Essay)
Problem (問題文)
English:
Directions: Read the question below. You have 30 minutes to plan, write, and revise an essay in response to the question. An effective response will usually contain at least 300 words.
Question:
Some companies allow their employees to work from home, while others require them to work in an office. Which working environment do you prefer? Support your opinion with specific reasons and examples.
In recent years, the debate over whether employees should work from home or in an office has become increasingly prominent. While working in a traditional office environment offers some advantages, such as direct face-to-face interaction, I firmly believe that working from home is a superior option for most professionals. This is primarily because it eliminates commute time and allows for a more flexible working atmosphere, both of which contribute to higher overall productivity.
First and foremost, working from home saves a significant amount of time by eliminating the daily commute. In many major cities, workers spend one to two hours every day traveling back and forth to their offices. This commute can be extremely exhausting and stressful, particularly during peak hours on crowded public transportation or in heavy traffic. By working remotely, employees can utilize this saved time to rest, exercise, or focus more on their work. As a result, they begin their workday feeling energized rather than drained, which leads to better focus and higher output.
Secondly, a home environment provides a level of flexibility and quietness that is often absent in a standard office. Open-plan offices, while designed to foster teamwork, can be full of distractions such as loud phone calls, sudden meetings, and frequent interruptions from colleagues. In contrast, working from home allows individuals to create a customized workspace where they can concentrate deeply on complex tasks. For instance, when I work on detailed reports, I find that being in a quiet room at home helps me complete my tasks much faster than when I am in a noisy office setting.
In conclusion, although office working has its merits regarding in-person collaboration, the benefits of working from home far outweigh them. By reducing commuting stress and providing a quieter, more flexible atmosphere, remote work enhances employee well-being and job performance. Therefore, companies should continue to embrace working from home as a primary employment option.

(I think that… / I agree with…)
(First, … / Second, …)
(Therefore, …)

TOPIC:
Should more companies allow their employees to work entirely from home?
POINTS (You can use these or your own):
- Work-life balance
- Productivity
- Communication
- Cost reduction
[ SAMPLE ANSWER /
I believe that companies should allow more employees to work entirely from home. This shift offers significant benefits for both workers and businesses in today's digital era.
First, working from home greatly improves employees' work-life balance. By eliminating daily commutes, workers save substantial time and energy, which they can spend with family or on personal well-being. Reduced commuting stress also leads to better mental health and higher overall job satisfaction.
Second, remote work leads to notable cost reduction for both parties. Companies can reduce office space, utility bills, and maintenance costs, while employees save on transportation and daily expenses. These financial savings can be reinvested into company growth or employee welfare programs.
In conclusion, although remote work presents some communication challenges, the advantages of better work-life balance and reduced expenses make full-time working from home a worthwhile policy for modern companies.

TOPIC:
These days, many people use digital textbooks instead of paper books in schools. Do you think using digital textbooks is a good idea?
POINTS (You can use these or your own):
- Convenience
- Health
- Cost
[ SAMPLE ANSWER /
I think using digital textbooks in schools is a good idea for two reasons.
First, digital textbooks are very convenient for students. Instead of carrying many heavy paper books every day, students only need to bring one tablet device to school. This makes their school bags much lighter.
Second, digital textbooks help families save money. Digital books are often cheaper than printed books, and students do not need to buy new paper editions every year.
For these reasons, I believe that using digital textbooks is a great choice for modern education.

Do you think people should spend less time using smartphones? Give at least two reasons for your opinion.
I think people should spend less time using smartphones. First, spending too much time on smartphones can have a negative effect on our health. For example, looking at a screen for many hours can cause eye strain and make it difficult to sleep well. Second, smartphones can prevent us from communicating with people face to face. If we spend too much time looking at our phones, we may miss opportunities to have meaningful conversations with family and friends. Therefore, I believe we should use smartphones wisely and make time for other activities.
What is the best way to learn about a foreign country: visiting it, reading books, or watching videos? Explain your choice.
I believe that visiting a foreign country is the best way to learn about it. One reason is that we can experience its culture directly. For instance, when we visit a local market, we can see what people eat, how they communicate, and what their daily lives are like. Another reason is that traveling gives us opportunities to meet local people. Talking with them can help us understand their values and ways of thinking. Books and videos are useful, but they cannot completely replace the experience of being there. For these reasons, I think traveling is the best way to understand another country.
Do you think museums are still important in the age of the Internet? Give reasons for your answer.
Yes, I think museums are still very important, even in the age of the Internet. First, museums allow us to see real works of art and historical objects. Seeing an original painting is very different from seeing a digital image on a computer screen. We can appreciate its size, colors, and texture in a much more direct way. Second, museums provide opportunities to learn in a quiet and focused environment. Although we can find a great deal of information online, it is sometimes difficult to know which information is reliable. Museums can provide carefully selected and professionally explained information. Therefore, museums will continue to play an important role in education and culture.

Some people believe that artificial intelligence will make our lives better, while others worry that it will cause new problems. What do you think?
I believe that artificial intelligence will make our lives better if we use it properly. One major advantage of AI is that it can help us save time. For example, AI can quickly summarize large amounts of information and help people with routine tasks. As a result, we can spend more time on creative activities and communication with others. However, AI also has risks. People may become too dependent on it and stop thinking for themselves. There is also a possibility that some jobs will disappear because of automation. Therefore, we should not simply accept or reject AI. Instead, we need to learn how to use it responsibly while understanding its limitations.

| I is agree → I agree | agree は動詞(〜に同意する)なので be動詞 は不要です。 |
| two reason → two reasons | 主語が two(複数形)なので、名詞 reason に複数形の -s をつけます。 |
| when people traveling → when people travel | 接続詞 when の後ろに節(主語+動詞)を続けるため、現在進行形 traveling ではなく現在形 travel に直します。 |
| can learned → can learn | 助動詞(can)の後ろに置く動詞は、必ず原形(learn)にします。 |
| go to … and he see → went to … and he saw | last year(過去の出来事)の話をしているため、動詞を過去形(went / saw)にします。 |
| see … music → experienced … music | 音楽は「見る(see)」ものではないため、experienced(体験した)や listened to(聴いた)に置き換えます。 |
| he’s view → his view | 「彼の視点」という所有格を表すため、he is の略形(he's)ではなく his を使います。 |
| view of world → view of the world | 世界(world)は特定の唯一の概念を指すため、冠詞 the をつけて the world とします。 |
| must solving → must solve | 助動詞(must)の後ろに置く動詞は原形(solve)にします。 |
| finding … or buy → finding … or buying | 前置詞 like の後ろに並べる動名詞の形(finding と buying)を統一(並列関係)させます。 |
| This experiences helps →These experiences help | 名詞 experiences が複数形なので、指示代名詞も複数形 These にし、動詞の三単現の -s を外します。 |
| grow up → grow | grow up
(Listening)
- ChatGPT / Gemini:

(Translation)

The Eiffel Tower is a 330-meter-tall (with antennas) wrought iron tower located in Paris, at the northwestern end of the Champ de Mars park along the banks of the Seine River in the 7th arrondissement. Its official address is 5 Avenue Anatole-France.
Built in two years by Gustave Eiffel and his collaborators for the 1889 Paris Universal Exposition—celebrating the centennial of the French Revolution—and initially named the “300-Meter Tower,” it has become the symbol of the French capital and a leading tourist destination: it was the fourth most visited ticketed French cultural site in 2016, with 5.9 million visitors. Since opening to the public, it has welcomed over 300 million visitors.
With an original height of 312 meters, the Eiffel Tower remained the world’s tallest monument for forty years. The second level of the third floor, sometimes called the fourth floor, located at 279.11 meters, is the highest publicly accessible observation platform in the European Union and the second highest in Europe, behind Moscow’s Ostankino Tower at 337 meters. The tower’s height has been increased several times by the installation of a flag and subsequently numerous antennas, notably in 1957 (320.75 m), 1991, 1994, 2000, and 2022. Used in the past for numerous scientific experiments, today it serves as a transmitter for radio and television programs.
