[icon name="question-circle" class="fa-lg" unprefixed_class=""] なぜいま『レ・ミゼラブル』なのか？
今年も早くも年末を迎えました。2017年がもうすぐ終わろうとしています。私にとって、今年は退職して、長年住み慣れた東京を後にして、家族のいる愛媛県の松山市に住み始めるなど、激動の1年でした。また、ウェブに関しては、生まれて初めてWordPressのブログを自作し、さまざまなテーマでブログを作り始めました。そこで、この年の最後を飾るWordPressブログのテーマを何にしようか、などと考えてみました。たまたま、さきほどApple Musicを検索していたら、ミュージカル『レ・ミゼラブル』がなんと4本も入っていることを知りました。なかでも、1985年制作のOriginal London Cast版というのが、最高にすばらしく、かつて本場のロンドンで見たミュージカルを思い出して感動をあらたにしました。そこで、私にとっての『レ・ミゼラブル』の思い出と、来年ロンドンに行くときにもう一度見たいと思っているミュージカルに関連する情報の収集を兼ねて、今年最後のブログをしたためてみたいと思います。

私の妻はフランス文学者ですが、専門がアンドレ・ジードだけのことはあり、ヴィクトル・ユーゴーはあまり好きではないようです。かつて、「エルミタージュ」誌が「あなたのいちばん好きな詩人はだれですか？」というアンケートを行ったとき、アンドレ・ジードは、「残念ながら、ユゴーです」と皮肉たっぷりに答えたように、ユーゴーに対する評価は、必ずしも肯定的なものだけとはいえないようです。日本のフランス文学者でも、ユーゴ−の専門家というのは意外と少ないようです。
しかし、一般の日本人の間では、私を含めて、ユーゴーのファンはいまだに非常に多いのではないでしょうか。私が初めてヴィクトル・ユーゴーの小説『レ・ミゼラブル』を読んだのは、学生時代でした。いまから40年以上も前のことです。『モンテ・クリスト伯』『ジャン・クリストフ』と並んで、長編にもかかわらず、繰り返し読んでは感動したことを覚えています。どの部分に感動したのか、いまでは思えていません。最近、フランス語の原書にも挑戦しようと思い、iBooksにダウンロードだけはしてみたのですが、私の語学力では、まだすらすら読めるというわけにはいきません。来年こそは全巻原書で通読してみたいものです(iBooksでは、分からない単語をクリックすると、仏英辞典が開き、英語で語義を示してくれるので便利です。Kindle版だとフランス語でしか意味が表示されないので、iBook版のほうが便利だと思います）。
「自分の体験から割り出すなら 、 『レ ・ミゼラブル 』全巻を原書で読んだことのあるフランス文学研究家は 、 『大菩峠 』を読了した国文学研究家よりも少ないのではないかという気がする 。」(『レ・ミゼラブル百六景』)
とのことですから、もしこれができれば、並の仏文学者以上ということになります。挑戦しがいはあるかもしれません。
私が初めてミュージカルで『レ・ミゼラブル』を見たのは、1990年代だったと記憶しています。ニューヨークに滞在中、ブロードウェイの舞台で、人気の『レ・ミゼラブル』を見て、とても感動したことを覚えています。とくに、バリケード封鎖の場面は、大がかりな舞台装置とライブの迫力に圧倒されました。その後も、ニューヨークでまた見たのを覚えています。
3回目は、本場ロンドンの舞台でした。このときの感動も忘れられません。このミュージカルの初演がロンドンだったとは、そのときは知りませんでした。しかし、さすがにすばらしいキャストでした。あれはたしか2001年ころだったのではないかと思います。その後は、『レ・ミゼラブル』のミュージカルを観る機会はなく、現在に至ります。今年は、日本での初演から30周年記念だそうで、春から夏にかけて、東京を中心に記念公演が行われたようですね。私は残念ながら、東京にはいなかったので、見に行く機会はありませんでした。YouTubeでその片鱗を伺うことができるだけです。

現在私たちが聴いているミュージカル『レ・ミゼラブル』の初演は、1985年のロンドン公演でした。製作は、キャメロン・マッキントッシュ、ロイヤル・シェイクスピア・カンパニー、作曲はクロード＝ミシェル・シェーンベルクでした。この上演作品は1987年にトニー賞を受賞しています。上演劇場は、当初のバービカン・センターから、現在はクイーンズ劇場で常時上演されるようになっています。

私の好きなシーンと歌詞
このミュージカルは、聴き所が満載ですが、なかでも私がとくに好きな曲のシーンと、歌詞をあげておきたいと思います。
I Dreamed a Dream
これは、劇中もっとも有名な曲の一つです。「夢やぶれて」と訳されています。娼婦のファンティーヌが、若い頃の失恋と我が身の境遇を嘆いて歌ったものです。歌詞は次の通りです。

この曲が近年とくに有名になったのは、イギリスの無名の歌手、Susan Boyleさんが、歌手の登竜門であるテレビ番組で歌い、それがYouTubeに配信されて、世界中にブームを引き起こしたからです。番組中で、彼女は司会者から「どんな歌手になりたいか?」と聞かれて、大担にも「エレーヌ・ペイジ」と答えましたが、それは程なく実現することになります。いまや、世界でもっとも人気のある歌手の一人になったからです。

ファンティーヌは結核をわずらい、マドレーヌ市長（ジャン・ヴァル・ジャン）の計らいで、病院に収容されますが、病状は重くなるばかりでした。マドレーヌ市長は、死の床にあるファンティーヌに、彼女の一人娘コゼットの面倒をみると約束します。これも感動的なシーンです。

パリ市民の蜂起に同調してバリケードの中にいたマリウスは、コゼットへの別れの手紙をエポニーヌに託します。エポニーヌはそれをもってバリケードを抜け出し、コゼットのもとへ向かいます。マリウスを一途に愛するエポニーヌでしたが、片思いであることを知りつつも、マリウスへの想いを断ち切れず、愛する想いを切々と歌い上げます。日本人として初めて、ロンドンの舞台でエポニーヌ役を見事に演じた島田歌穂さんの歌唱も光っていました(国際キャストによるCDにも載っています）。

バリケードの戦いで傷ついたマリウスを救ったジャンヴァルジャンでしたが、マリウスはそれを知らず、コゼットと結ばれても遠ざけていました。しかし、最後にジャンヴァルジャンが命の恩人だったことを知ります。しかし、そのとき、ジャンヴァルジャンは死の床にいました。いまは、天国のファンティーヌに導かれて、コゼットとマリウスに見守られながら、安らかに息を引き取るのでした。

ライブの劇場では、なかなか歌詞を正確に聴き取ることが難しかったのですが、ネットで公開されている歌詞とYouTubeの映像を見ると、いままでよりも理解が深まったような気がします。来年は、このブログを見ながら、本場のLes Miserablesを楽しみたいと思っています。

さきほど、Apple MusicでLes Miserablesの曲を探していたところ、何と全曲版が４つも見つかりました。聴き放題のサービスなので、試しに4本全部をダウンロードしてみました。次の４つです。

- Les Miserables Live! : 2010 Cast Album (2010)
- Les Miserables - Movie: Soundtrack (2013)
それぞれに個性があって、楽しめるのですが、私にとっていちばん懐かしく、そして感動を引き起こすのは、やはり1985年のオリジナルキャストによる記念碑的な作品です。どの歌手もすばらしく、まさに奇跡のオールスターキャストによる名演だと思います。8部門でトニー賞を獲得したというのも頷けます。この作品はまさしく永遠に輝く続けることでしょう。

最後に、鹿島茂著『レ・ミゼラブル百六景』（上のボタンをクリックしてください）を手がかりとして、この小説に登場するパリ市内の舞台各所を、「WP Google Mapsプラグイン」を用いてバーチャルに再現してみたいと思います。幸い、豊島与志雄訳『レ・ミゼラブル』および原作は著作権が切れているので、マップ上のMarkerに情報として落とし込むことが可能です。少し時間はかかると思いますが、ユーゴーが作品のどの部分でパリのどのようなスポットをどのように描いているのか、解明したいと思っています。
この作業は、年が明けてからにしたいと思います。
